Rishi Sunak is a British politician who has served as the Chancellor of the Exchequer since February 2020. He is a member of the Conservative Party and has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Richmond in North Yorkshire since 2015.
Sunak was born on May 12, 1980, in Southampton, England. He studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at Oxford University and later pursued an MBA at Stanford University in the United States. Before entering politics, Sunak had a successful career in finance, working for investment bank Goldman Sachs and later as a partner at a hedge fund.
In 2015, Sunak entered politics and was elected as the MP for Richmond, succeeding former Conservative Party leader William Hague. He quickly rose through the ranks and gained prominence within the party.
After Boris Johnson became Prime Minister in July 2019, Sunak was appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Following the resignation of Sajid Javid as Chancellor in February 2020, Sunak was promoted to Chancellor of the Exchequer, making him responsible for the UK's economic and financial matters, including taxation, public spending, and fiscal policy.
As Chancellor, Sunak has played a central role in the UK government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, implementing various economic support measures to mitigate the impact of the crisis on businesses and individuals. He has also delivered several budgets outlining the government's fiscal plans and economic priorities.
Sunak is seen as a rising star within the Conservative Party and is often touted as a potential future leader. His handling of the economy and his performance as Chancellor have garnered both praise and criticism, depending on perspectives regarding economic policy and government intervention.
